about

Redefiniton of Lo-Fi Hip-Hop, [First Class Tape 2]

[First Class Tape], which was conducted under the curation of Beautiful Disco, left several meanings. The first is, the works that fall under a branch of music called lo-fi hip-hop are not simply used as background music when studying or taking a rest. It meant that it contained its fierceness and delicate, sometimes ingenious composition. In addition, by introducing Asian musicians in one album, it was announced that such a movement exists in Asia. The meaning is not everything. The outstanding musicians showed their musical skills as well as their colors, and it was revealed that all the music called lo-fi hip-hop is not the same.

The second album [First Class Tape 2] has a slightly different lineup. Except for the curator Beautiful Disco, no Korean musician participated in the previous work. This time, beatmakers from America and Europe participated, and although it consists of works that feel artistic craftsmanship, there are also owners of music included in the ‘to study/relax to’ playlist. From the United States, where there has already a basis of musical activity for beatmakers to work, to Norway, Finland, and Italy, which are relatively unfamiliar, the regions where each of them is located are also very different. As such, the changes and differences between the songs in the work are as abundant as the previous work, and the width is much wider. From Ol’ Burger Beats, who became famous on various platforms from Boiler Room to Spotify, to Vesa Beats, who inherited the legacy of New York, participated. In addition, the overseas line-up is diverse, including jazz trumpeter and composer Christopher Eikrem, who has collaborated with Beautiful Disco. From DAUL, Unsinkable, and Monocat, who create sophisticated works, to cjb95, who is recently creating sensuous movements, many people gather to solve their concerns and answers about lo-fi hip-hop. In addition to the development of each song itself with colorful and detailed details, you will hear more if you listen carefully to the flow of the overall composition and track arrangement of the album. the mastering was directed by Jae-soo Yi of Sonicity Mastering Studio, who has been in charge of many outstanding works so far. The artwork is created by Dominic Kesterton, making it even more interesting. Dominic Kesterton, who is based in the UK and is active worldwide, is an illustrator who works from media such as The New York Times and It's Nice That to large clients such as Apple and Nike. On the cover of this album, you can see neat and clear lines and impressive colors along with the apples he mainly used.

I would like to emphasize the appreciation method that approaches it as a work, observes it closely, and recommends listening to it with an attitude of inquiry even if you are not a musician. Even if it seems to be thrown indifferently at times, even if there are details and sound compositions that only a few people can recognize, it came out into the world to exist as a piece of music, and the song was not made solely for function. The value of this work varies depending on who listens to it, but I want to stick to an attitude that focuses on the aspect of the work. This work is well worth it.
